S.P.A.R. Relationships

The Main Thing

We believe that relationships are everything

The kingdom of God is a relational kingdom

Nothing of any spiritual value can happen outside of intimate, Christ-centered relationships. All of our trainings and weekend God encounters are designed to create and strengthen these spiritual friendships. This way of relating one to another must become a lifestyle, a part of our every day life. We call these life-giving connections S.P.A.R. relationships.

SPAR stands for

Sharpening, Prayer, Affirmation, and Repentance

These are the four primary relational activities found in the New Testament. I will give a brief overview of each of the four skills.

Z

Sharpening

Sharpening is the most challenging of the four. Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” We sharpen one another by asking probing questions to help believers get to what is really in the heart. This can get painful at times as blind spots are exposed, but the fruit of repentance is life-changing. We also sharpen one another by “speaking the truth in love.” These fierce words can cut deep, and yet we all desire to have people in our lives that love us enough to speak the honest truth.

Z

Prayer

Prayer is the most important activity in our relating to one another. If God is not active in our relationships, then we are merely socializing. How do we encounter God? Surprisingly, we don’t spend much time “praying FOR each other.” Instead we lead each other into prayers of repentance, surrender, gratitude, renouncing lies, and declaring truth. This empowers each person to express their need to God, hear His voice, and respond back to Him. This fosters an intimacy with God that causes true transformation at the heart level.

Z

Affirmation

Affirmation is simply reminding each other of who we are in Christ. We all struggle believing the wonderful truth about who God says that we are. We believe lies about our identity as believers every day. We need friends that can look us in the eye and tell us how much we have impacted the lives of others, the attributes of Christ that shine forth in our lives, and the truth about who we are because of the blood of Christ.

Z

Repentance

Repentance is the fruit of the first three relations skills. If we are truly sharpening, praying, and affirming, then we will experience genuine transformation- every time we come together. Repentance means to “change one’s mind” with God’s help. This is the powerful result of SPAR relationships, being together always results in true freedom.

SPAR Relationships

Weekly Spar Groups

Most SPAR relationships meet in weekly SPAR groups. These are groups of 3-8 believers that meet for a minimum of 90 minutes to carry out the four SPAR activities. And although the meetings are important, we get to practice this Biblical way of relating to others every day of our lives.

We have discovered that people, both in the church and out, are hungry to connect with others in a genuine, intimate way. The SPAR model is a simple and practical way to experience the abundant life of Christ with the people that we love and care about.
